I know these are old hat but they amuse me on a quiet day.
I got this email minutes ago and an obvious scam.
I did my usual thing of hover the mouse over the quite legitimate looking link and revealed a redirect to another website.
For further amusement I clicked on the link expecting an ANZ website facsimile.... and sure enough it was.
Next I entered some account rubbish numbers and rubbish password and of course I got in
Then I was offered this screen at which point I lost interest
They give themselves away with wanting 'informations' plural and you can see the dodgy website url at the top...

Yesterday I got the old telephone call from a foreign lady wanting to help me sell or rent my house and to assist me with finances
I held on for a while in silence , then hung up

OT I would not even click on the thing. Some times the next click might be designed to find you email is a valid one and and active.
Depends on the sophistication of the crap coming at you. I might be wrong but I don't take the chance.
A late friend thought he was being smart and answered one of those "send us money" to register your win emails. He made a smart remark forgetting they now had his email as a correct account.
He obviously had his address sold on, as he had tons of junk mail from then on.

Thanks... but worry not thy pretty head DT
The email they used was on one of my domains as my admin contact.
I know from experience that scammers and spammers check domain names and look for any contact info. So I put up one typically as say admin15@ot.com.au and when it is used by a suss operator then I delete it and create say admin27@ot.com.au
As I have mentioned before I have over 500 email addresses that I have allocated to anything/anybody, other than personal contacts. For example if I was dealing with a plumber called dtpipes I would create dtpipes@ot.com.au and that is the only way you could email me. So only you and I would know of that email address.
If I began to get spam to dtpipes@ot.com.au then I would know it was your fault. After complaining to your IT department I would create another one for you to use... say dtpipes13@ot.com.au and delete your original. That process takes less than 30 seconds.
So in summary, I have quite a few disposable email addresses that I can dump if necessary.

We have been getting phone calls from a mobile number with a computer-generated voice telling me that they have detected problems from my IP address that is causing problems with the internet and I will be disconnected within 24 hours. Press 1 to speak to a tech officer. Having a bit of time up my sleeve I pressed 1 this morning. Transferred to an accented gentleman in a noisy call centre who proceeded to ask what operating system etc and was I in front of my computer, I was them put on hold again, after about 2 minutes waiting with dead silence from the phone I hung up. Within 30 seconds another call from the same number, followed by about 3 more when I didn't answer. Then our other phone started ringing, the same number, This is the 3rd time in the last week that the same number has rang and threatened to disconnect my internet. It is still connected.

I used to get those phone calls from Telstra telling me that i was causing problems from my IP address. They would always say that I was going to be disconnected and would have to pay hefty fees to be re-connected.
This happened so often that one day I just decided to tell them -
Please, please disconnect me from this bl@@dy internet. Maybe then these f#X!ing scam phone calls will stop!
After that, nothing but silence....
I don't answer that phone anymore unless it is a known phone number.

Got one yesterday from Telstra...Same female voice as is on their official site...Telling me that there has been several dishonored payments made recently and to proceed further I had to answer several security questions...I've had problems with direct debit payments to Telstra recently so I thought the call was legitimate.....after nominating an incorrect birth date she asked me to insert the correct date and press 1 etc.....At this point I hung up...But still unsure if it was a scam or not...I'll wait and see what happens....
If it was a scam, I have to say that these bastards are getting very, very clever. The problems I had with Telstra payments were only a couple of days ago..seems too much of a coincidence...I still cant believe that in this modern day of technological advancement, that the authorities cant track them down...They are threatening the whole modern day economy with their criminal actions and the penalties, when caught should be most severe..even draconian IMO.

Jock, by far the best thing to do is for you to either ring them on a known number, of easier still, drop into a Telstra shop next time you go shopping.

Phone rang in the car the other day, and when I answered an obviously recorded message informed me my Tax file had been suspended, and I faced huge fines and Gaol if I didn't "press 1" and give my File No to reinstitute my account.
I laughed out loud, didn't see the need to tell them my "File" has been suspended for the last 9 years since I retired. Pricks!!

Got an e-mail from my insurance Co. telling me they'd made an error on one of my policies and that I was due for a refund...I could reply by email with my full details etc. Ha Ha !! I thought..another bloody scam....Decided to ring them on their official phone no. and, would you believe, it was legitimate...I'm getting a refund of just under $300. sending to me by cheque...Funny thing is, it relates to a policy I had in back in 2014.. I didn't ask any questions..nice Xmas pressy on top of ScoMo's $250.
Hard to tell the legit. from the scammers.

Ah! ha! Our One Single pleasure of keeping our landline after NBN came by is that we have our answering Machine on with a lovely TESLTRA message and we just sit and listen to the 4 rings, to hear any messages to answer, but get very few as 98% simply hang up.
