An item from Quora. I retired 24 years ago, aged 58
There are a few valid points herein... but I cannot cope with this line. I can't start the day without a good shower and I don't wear pajamas.
Dave Nelson Retired (2013–present)Updated Mar 10 What don’t they tell you about retiring early? I retired at 51 eleven years ago. I always planned on retiring as early as I could because both my parents died young and I knew I didn’t want to spend my entire life at a desk. My aunt was living with me at the time and she was slowing down. We knew it was time for me to retire and move back home for her to have one last hurrah and that is what happened. A year and a half after I retired, she passed away. When you have been retired a few years you forget the day of the week it is. There is no significant difference between the days so they eventually blend together. You go to the grocery store and run errands on your own schedule. No more hurrying after work or during lunch breaks. You shower less. Once or twice a week is ok. Pajamas and sweats become everyday casual wear. No need to dress up. Vacations become extended trips you take during the off season to avoid crowds. I remember taking one trip where I intended to stay only a couple weeks. Because the weather heated up across the Great Plains, I decided to spend the next couple months at high elevation before heading back. Now that my former co-workers are reaching their 60s they are starting to retire. I may not make as much as they do in retirement but time to me is priceless and I’m glad I retired early. Retiring early meant that I got to spend a lot of time with my dog who loves to go hiking.

I retired at 60. The last two years I don’t know how I had time to got to work. I play bowls two to three days a week. I get up early and walk along the beach at least one day a week. I play guitar one day a week with my friends. And play croquet 1 day a week. We have happy hour three days a week at our country club. Then I still find time to spend with my Daughter and our closest friends.
Oh and a may have mentioned I have stage 4 cancer. Was given 2-5 years four and a half years ago. So how do I do it. Might be a bit like the Toby Keith song Don’t Let The Old Man In.
At least one morning a week we get up make coffee and toast and go back to bed till 9ish.
I make sure that I shave every day. And I dress reasonably well. No tracksuits or t shirts. I think by shaving and dressing well each day makes me feel good.

I retired early as well ,at 64 and spending my whole working life in a Kitchen I was burnt out. Needles to say health issue posed there ugly head up but with being retired allowed the time to attend to these and still does. Never got rid of my van during the dark days but used it as my goal to hit the road again and that's what we do. I live in an over 55s village with a lot of stuff going on,which you can join in or just go solo, but it's great for just hitting the toe and not worrying about home,it's all looked after. So retirement was a good move.

I retired 3 months before turning 65, well retired again that is! At 37 doctors told me I'd never work again due to 2 unfixable blockages after a major heart attack during which the heart stopped for 4 minutes I was back at work 18 months later, only part time but at work, 4 retired in 2006 and we went on our first trip in 2007, came home had fallen in love with traveling and went back to work, taking 3 to 5 months off every 2 years to travel, my boss kept the job for me till I got back, I worked for him for 12 years and never got long service because I kept "breaking service" but i didn't care Now I haven't "worked" for 4 years, I'm about to turn 69 and about to head off on another trip We don't have much in the way of money, only the old age pension, we make do with our 30yo caravan and 13yo car but money isn't everything, we have each other, good friends and a BIG country to see

I retired at 62 in 2007 and when at home I wondered how I had ever had the time to go to work. That much to do, vanning, home maintenance, vehicle service etc.
Can not understand why some retirees say they are bored. By the way I still shower every day.

And play croquet 1 day a week. I didn't know that Croquet was still being played until I met a Yank.
When building our house at Wynnum, a Yank used to walk by, and one time he mentioned that he comes in three month blocks.
So naturally, I asked him what on earth could bring him here multiple times for three months.
"Competitive Croquet" was his answer.
