It's a work in progress and we're nearly there A few months back, I started off with a 44 gallon steel drum, cut it in half, re-welded it with a piece of checker plate in the middle, the lid cut in half acting as the fire grill door and oven door and that's how it stayed for a few months This weekend we're up at the block to (almost) finish it, yesterday I started bright and early (for the block that is) after breakfast at just on 0900 after getting everything ready, I mixed a double batch of 4 to 1 mortar (bit heavy on the 1) bit of a bugger not having a TA and having to do it all myself I donned my bricklaying hat and started, I had got to the height of fitting the barrel on by lunchtime, when Adam arrived, one of the neighbours about 5 doors down (that's about 1.5km here) called in for a chat and a drink so we paused for an hour or so which delayed our finishing time but by 1700 it's was all over bar the shouting (cleaning up that is) which will be done today before the weed poisoning I'm hoping that Danika (Granddaughter) and Darren will be here for Easter and he can render it for us, that's his job so why not! If not I'll do it after burning the paint off the inside of the barrel and coating it all in rust converter and heat proof paint ready to try out on Easter Sunday

The concept/design looks terrific Frank
I have to ask though... did your bricklaying hat slip down to cover your eyes when you were cleaning up that excess mortar?

Nah, I think he left it like that purposefully to act as keying for when he renders the bottom half.

Roger,
I had considered but dismissed that as the lumpiness looked thicker than the usual render depth.
Mainly though... I'd hate to let a chance slip by to stir Frank

did your bricklaying hat slip down to cover your eyes when you were cleaning up that excess mortar? It is considered a feature these days, if done properly.

Thanks all for the kind words, OT 🖕😁, yes Rodger that's correct, Darren can knock off the excess if he wants He he ...I didnt have a pic of my webber Baby q but it is a great piza oven. But I do use a plain tile from Aldi ,made to go under the base when cooking. And oh yesss we take those lesbian flat bread thing's as bases... And you can make a piza at any campsite..... Not sure of that was a typo or a time in cheek comment but it gets my vote for comment of the day Yesterday was supposed to be a day of getting rid of weeds here at the block but it turned to shite As a couple of you know from Facebook Adam was on the whipper snipper set up with a blade attachment when one of the blades came off bounced off the fence maybe a couple of times and embedded itself in the foot, backwards, went through the leather workboot as of it wasn't there, luckily I suppose, it was slowed by the fence and boot as it went nearly almost the whole 7cm length into the foot Had a quick look, , he was bleeding profusely through the boot and no way of stopping the blood unless the boot was removed, no way to remove the boot without removing the blade, I know you shouldn't remove the object from a wound but what else to do? I got my multy tool out and gave it a gentle pull, no movement *$hit* have it a harder pull and it released, found out later it was stuck in the bone Took the boot and sock off and saw this (this is when the ambos were looking at it) I ran to turn the genny off, Brenda was in the old cabin cleaning up, then to the car to get the first had kit and called for Brenda to come, meanwhile Adam was feeling a little ditzy so hopped to a pallet platform to lay down and elevate the foot While Brenda called the ambulance, I bandaged the foot and managed to stop the bleeding 40 minutes later the ambulance arrived, they looked at it and decided to take him to Murray bridge hospital where the doctor looked at the photos Adam had (the ones here) and said ok well just stich that up and send you home ?Adam suggested xrays and she said that's only for broken bones and such this is a laceration caused by the blade going in 2cm Adam told her it was 6cm and she insisted it was 2 (she had the blade in hand) Look she said I'll measure it! Went and got a tape measure, got back 20 minutes later and said, ok the blade went in 6cm were going to do an xray *ya think ya dumb b....* He has an open compound fracture They bandaged him up, gave him anti biotics and pain relief and told him to call us to take him to the RAH, no hospital transfer which I was surprised at considering they don't usually let you go with a canula in the arm Anyway Brenda stayed here with the dogs as I knew it would be late got him to the RAH and waited till he went up to a room before heading back getting back here at 2215 I just heard from him he's going into surgery late morning to repair the bone and make sure there's no nerve or tension damage, which there doesn't seem to be Bloody kids, who'd have em were going to clean up, pack up, lock up and head home, then ring the hospital at 1pm to see what's happening then head down there

Gee Frank, If it's not sandlewood it is whipper snipper blades.
I hope all goes well for Adam and that you and Brenda get your nerves back soon.
Ah well it will be a story to tell when you are sitting around having your first pizza.
Take care.

Sorry to hear about Adam's accident Frank, hope he has quick recovery.
When you get a spare moment could you post a photo of that blade attachment assembly, I have never seen one like that.

Barry were home now and I've thrown it out up at the block, there were some available on ebay a few months back but no longer there It was given to us by a friend as it didn't fit their whipper sniper and it's been on for about a year There are some similar now with only 3 blades but it's all plastic
Adam had the op yesterday afternoon but still don't know what, the surgeon did try to tell him after the op but he was to drowsy so well wait till today to find out, and also when he's coming home, all we know is he can't weight bear at all for 2 weeks and will be wearing a moon boot for about 3-4 weeks after that
Edit just heard from Adam, 2 bones are damaged, to the first 2 toes, no tendon damage only bruised and one nerve has been frayed but not cut all in all lucky it wasn't worse according to the surgeon, the bones are in a fee fragments but because they were broken by metal, can't be fixed with metal plates due to infection ?? ?? They're keeping him in another day to get intravenous antibiotics into him as it was all very dirty He was given that in Murray bridge and also tetanus

It sounds as if he was "lucky" that it was not worse than it is and "unlucky" that it happened at all. I hope he has full recovery.

We were up here fit a few days while Adam recovers, he's done nothing much of course he can't weight bear till next week, we borrowed a wheel chair for him to get himself around easier, but I've been busy getting a few jobs done and working on the oven, we were going to stay another day just to relax but Adam got a txt saying he had an xray appointment at 1030 tomorrow at the RAH so it's clean up day and head home Yesterday I got the first coat of the render on before the rain came so the second will have to wait till Easter Friday's job was covering it in wire mesh
Yesterday's was the render
It's still rough finish for the second coast to adhere It rained a fair bit of the night so it's cooled off nicely now, Adam is still asleep so when he's awake I'll start packing up Oh BTW Barry, I hadn't thrown that blade attachment away, this is it

Frank,
I was tempted to say... 'you made a mesh of that too' but it is looking quite good now In one shot I see a couple of crosses in the distance. Do they mark the sites of other critics of your initial handiwork?
Once you get the second coat of rendering finished how long will you wait for it to cure before you light the fire?

Maybe Frank will have a José party. ("Come on baby light my fire")
