Dropped the cruiser off this morning for a transmission service with the bloke that has been servicing or rebuilding my auto's since 1986 and he was inspecting parts out of a Ford Ranger transmission when I walked into the workshop. There were two transmissions in pieces, he said both from Rangers.
Now I don't want to offend anyone on the forum if you have one but only repeating what he said to me-- do not buy a Ranger, it will cost $7000-00 to rebuild each of these, they are not good.
If thinking of buying one perhaps investigate more before doing so.

Also heard a similar story from a mates son who owns a workshop. Can’t remember whether current model or older if it makes any difference as it was just in a general conversation.

I have a BT 50 2013 model, I think is the same Auto gear box, haven't had any issues too date and she has 240 thousand klm.I have had the Gearbox oil changed 3 times and the last was a full flush and service as well because I tow the van. After 60 thousand and spending 3 months towing around Tassy and too and fro from Sunshine Coast they did a gear oil change and it was blacker than black. This business of going to 250 thousand before an gear oil replacement is most probably contributing to the issue.Mt auto chap said they should have another gear box cooler put on them.

As oft stated my 2007 Prado is used only for towing the caravan.
It has done 157,000km and I have replaced the auto fluid twice and front/rear diff oil 6 times.
Because of the Prado's hard work I replaced the worn injectors at around 80,000 and I will need to do that again when we get home. Not a fun job but at least warm weather is coming.

The auto boxes are cooled with engine coolant and run very hot, usually well over 90 degrees and up into the 100's. They really need an external oil cooler, especially if towing a lot. There are aftermarket options around that completely bypass the engine coolant using a totally separate, external system. The internal thermostat in the box can (should) also be changed, some remove them completely as they also only operate at the higher temperatures.
When I bought my Ranger, I made sure I got a manual, partly because I prefer them for towing and off-roading, but also because I'd heard of the issues the auto boxes were having... and that was back in late 2016.

Yes, the 10 speed auto was first used with the 2.0 litre and the 6 speed auto was used with the 3.2 litre 5 cylinder.
The latest Ranger models now have either a 6 speed manual or an updated 10 speed auto. The 6 speed auto or the 3.2 litre motor, are no longer an option.

So it is the 10 spd that is having issues

The 10 speed had some software issues as it could get confused, but no, it's the 6 speed that has the overheating issues.
