Well, it's over for the Tillies...they were never in the game. I find it rather amusing that every second word uttered by the commentators was " Sam Kerr "..She's a great player and her individual goal was something to remember for a long time....But! really guys this continual adulation by the commentary is a bit much..It does not help her or the team to put so much pressure expectations on her/their shoulders.
We've seen a huge increase in interest in womens sport recently...be it Soccer, cricket or the different football codes..about bloody time IMO.

I was pleased to see our old enemy get done by Spain
Without any skin in the game we watched most of the fairly brutal match.
God knows why it is called the 'beautiful game'. Most of the time it is as interesting as a pinball machine with the ball bouncing between players.
It is also soul destroying where one lucky kick decides the outcome. Totally unfair
The true skills of ball game players can only be properly and fairly determined by a multiple scoring result, preferably into double figures. That produces a stastical average of skills rather than a distorted outcome by a single lucky shot.

I have thought for a long time about what you said, OT, and agree. Many sports have had rule changes over the years to "improve" the game. Perhaps they could make the goal in soccer a bit wider or higher to make it easier to score or adopt a variation of AFL scoring by giving several points for a goal and 1 point for kicking between the vertical posts but above the crossbar. There are many possibilities in other sports, too. Why do tennis players have 2 chances to get the serve in? Why is a "let" serve replayed but a net cord in general play results in play continuing? There must be plenty more "improvements" to other sports people here could suggest. Any ideas?

Ken,
You touched on a tennis point that has bugged me.
The net chord is just another 'luck' thing.
Some will say that it evens out over time but that is of no help when a single chord costs a set or a match.
I have been saying to my wife for yonks that there should be another line on the court. Let's say parallel to and 1 metre from the net.
If a chord causes the ball to go over but drop into that zone it is declared a dead ball and point replayed. That rule could not be applied if the ball falls on the hitter's side.
Having a 1 metre zone would give the receiver a bit of a chance to reach the ball and keep the point going.

or adopt a variation of AFL scoring by giving several points for a goal and 1 point for kicking between the vertical posts but above the crossbar. That's one of the things against AFL. What other game awards a point for not kicking straight? Let's not extend this sort of thing to other games.

I agree, Aussie rules is the only game where you get a point for almost getting it in As for the size of the goal in soccer, I think it's perfect and shows the skill of the players getting a ball in to such a small area, which with a ball traveling at around 110kph and up to 210kph is a very large area for the goalie to protect
From the net The fastest a player has kicked a soccer ball is 131mph (211 km/h). However, professional players kick the ball at an average speed of up to 70 mph(112 km/h), while youth players can kick a soccer ball as fast as 40 mph (64 km/h).

I think that Gaelic football has a 2 tier system. In the goal is worth more than above it, or something like that.
