I have written about using impact drivers and rattle guns to lower the stabiliser legs previously and I have just witnessed another episode of a "not very happy" caravan owner lamenting over a damaged stabilizer leg. I retrieved the damaged one from the rubbish bin after the owner departed the following morning and pulled it apart to inspect. The first picture shows the gearbox. The vertical gear drives the horizontal gear. The horizontal gear is pinned to the worm drive which lowers the leg. If you look closely at the top of the driven shaft the remnants of the battered drive pin that fixes the horizontal gear to the shaft can be seen. Obviously the unit is repairable with a new pin. Certainly much cheaper than purchasing a new unit at $120-$150 depending on size. Even the the 2 gears have suffered a battering. I still flinch when I hear a new neighbour in a park using the wrong tool for the job.

I have always thought that an impact driver or rattle gun were the wrong tool for dropping the legs and have always used a drill. I have mentioned a couple of times about the risk of breaking the roll pin to a few people and the last one I got told to "F Off, I know what I'm doing". Not going to worry about it now.
