Something I mentioned years ago on the old site and got a mixed reception. On a 50mm tow reciever for a hammen reece tow head has a bolt underneath to tighten on the inserted tow head.At the time I was told to leave it loose so to allow some of the 4x4 stiff suspension to disapate some of the harshness from the van.It got rubbished but now I have come across more info on this issue. The bolt to adjust on the tow head is to be tightened when Not towing to stop it rattling. When towing it should be removed to allow movement. This info came from a Ford Ranger handbook.

You are correct on the use for bolt Peter. I spoke with Hayman Reese about it not long after someone else mentioned it on a forum many moons ago. I vaguely remember there was some detrimental reason if it was tightened with the van attached but unsure about that now.

Yes you are correct. If you tighten the bolt while towing you'll eventually find that you can't get the bolt out as the forces tend to flatten and bell out the end of the bolt.
