On the "latest trip thread" I mentioned the cruiser lost power and I changed the fuel filter. Then when that did not fix the problem I looked and found a vacuum hose dropped off a small filter. Pushed it back on and off we go. We did not get too far, lost power again was able to pull over on side of road, the bloody hose came off the filter again. For some reason I do not have any spare vacuum hose, so had a good look at plastic filter and found slippery moisture on plastic tube that hose goes over. Wiped the oily substance off, cut hose shorter in case it had stretched a bit where it goes over the tube. Pushed it on again and off we go again. Bugger ! ! had to stop again shortly after. Ok getting seriously annoyed now, this was supposed to be an easy trip. This time I pulled the plastic filter off and bypassed the damned thing. Hose now going direct from rocker cover to inlet manifold crossover. Now we have full power again all the time. Does anyone know what this filter does ? I have asked service mechanics in the past but none know what it is for. It must be for a reason as most models of Toyota's have one. Barry

Just read I was asked about dash lights, no nothing lit up on the dash that is what made me think of vacuum.

It’s the MAP filter Barry.
“Toyota have installed these round filters on all turbo diesels to keep oil out of the MAP sensor. The OEM items ( part numbers 90917-11036 and 90917-11044) are plastic and has a reputation of cracking due to age and pressure (potentially higher than standard)”.

Thanks Jeff. I have never been able to find out what it was for. It did not create any problem when bypassed.

I'd replace it with a new one as it catches oil vapour to prevent the MAP sensor from contamination and erroneous readings.

Handy to know, I was not aware of this filter. My 100 Series had 220,000Kms when I sold it and never touched it and I better check my 200 out and see where it is. The video link makes it easy. JR

The only reason I knew about it was because of the engine replacement last year and I wanted everything that could be changed done. I read as much as I could and followed the Project 200 info.
