The days of hot wiring may be over but theft isn't.
An overseas relative alerted me to the Modern Vehicle Key Cloning happening in Holland, and I found this website. There will be other sites.

The current trend here at the moment is to break into the home and take the keys. And it makes no difference if you are home or not.

I wonder if it would slow them down if we went back to 5 on the floor?
Even better 3 on the tree.

My yet to be invoked idea that I had many years ago, probably in my GTHO time, was to place a relay contact in series with the starter motor controls.
Said relay would be operated by either an existing dashboard button/switch or add a switch wrongly labelled as air-horns or some other use.
For even tighter security 2 such switches could be used where both have to be pressed whilst the ignition key is used to start the engine as normal.
If the key is turned and the secret switch not pressed then nothing happens.

OT, I had similar in my RT Charger. I had a momentary switch under the carpet on the driver's side which needed to be pressed, with your foot, while starting. I chose that method so that passengers would not realise you were doing anything unusual or different when starting.

My Nissan had the fuel pump controlled by a tachometric relay, I have had a hidden switch which cuts the taco signal. www.ebay.com.au/itm/332055657571
I am however now fitting one of these into the system.
I will also fit one to Bonnies Holden Calais, then even if they get the keys, they will need the pin to start it.

I had a customer many years ago with a Suzuki Sierra wire his cut out switch to the cigarette lighter, if it wasn't pushed in car wouldn't start. After an hour looking I had to ring him at work to start it so i could service it Brian

Yes it's bothered me as well. Most modern cars have inbuilt immobilisers.Even if you hot wire and it starts it will conk out once the computer control releised there is no signal from the key.I had problems with my bt when new from other things fitted to the 12v system and the immobiliser would kick in after a couple of hundred yards. The add ons all needed relays which I had but the inbuilt one on the trailer brake needed an other relay to be on.I think as some posted better key safety in home like a key safe.I know when free camping I leave my keys in my shorts pocket roll them up and put under my pillow. No sneaking in and grabbing them without me knowing Plus a sign on the door that states Van protected by SMITH & WESTON 5 days out of 7 your guess would be good.Saw a sign like that on someone's unit door and I liked it.Choice for the crims.

You can also wrap the fob in aluminium foil, does the same and cheap.
