I think it was a few years ago that printer makers developed techniques to demand the use of their own expensive ink/toner.
Printers historically were sold very cheap as the maker profits were from you feeding their habit.
I remember buying a new colour printer for the caravan at $30
The other thing they did, and probably still do, is sell you a new printer fitted with only half-filled ink/toner.
Anyhow, this latest HP caper seems to want to employ printer firmware updates to control what you feed your printer.
The message here is don't allow such updates...

I have a Brother printer, it is always telling me I must use genuine ink cartridges, but I have never used genuine cartridges in all the years I have had printers, and that includes the single black ribbon type that I first had.

I had a brother printer, was only $30 odd, I tried having the cartridges refilled but it wouldn't print properly with them, definitely didn't do pictures That died and bought another for $59 this one I haven't tried to refill but there is some printing, calendar for instance, that will not be allowed without the real McCoy I don't do that much printing so I just buy the XL cartridges and that lasts my 12+ months

I use non genuine cartridges in my HP without any issues, but I do have the printer updates turned off just in case.

I have a Brother A4 Multi-function mono laser I bought in 2005 plus a Brother Multi-function A3 colour Inkjet bought in 2010 and a HP A4 colour Laser bought in 2008.
I have replaced the ink and toner several times over many years. Never had any quality issues with generic refills.
I get my stuff from www.inkstation.com.au/ and this is not a paid political advert

Ditto, I sometimes see genuine cartridges advertised from them cheaper than other generic suppliers are charging. Their generic HP cartridges work OK in my 3YO printer.
As for your printers, if they still work, hang onto them. They were built before these inhibiting techniques were starting to be built in.

Yep I get my non genuine cartridges from inkstation as well. Work in my Epson XP-6100 multifunction.
