Media report...AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said the agency will be holding talks with Russian law enforcement about the individuals allegedly responsible for the Medibank hack. "It is important to note that Russia benefits from the intelligence sharing and data shared through Interpol and that comes with responsibilities and accountabilities," he said. His message to the criminals was: "We know who you are and the AFP has some significant runs on the scoreboard when it comes to bringing overseas offenders back to Australia to face the justice system". Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw has announced the "unacceptable" cyber attack on Medibank is being carried out by individuals in Russia. "Our intelligence points to a group of loosely affiliated cyber criminals who are likely responsible for past significant breaches in countries across the world," he said. He said the cyber criminals are operating like a business with affiliates and associates supporting them. Kershaw added other individuals involved in the "business" are based in other countries. "We believe we know, which individuals are responsible but I will not be naming them," he said.

Hmmmm.....I wonder if our support for the Ukranians has resulted in Russian retaliation. ...Just a thought.

Not just a thought it's Putin giving us the finger and Russian "authorities" will do exactly the same at our request for help I'll bet $1 to a million the "individual" concerned is sitting in a Kremlin office

I think the Ruskies have been invading via cyberspace for years.
The Chinese are the same and there will be a few others.

Received a letter from Medibank yesterday for my wife informing her that her details had been stolen. ( We have not been with Medibank for at least five years )
Hackers have her first and last name, gender, date of birth, email, phone number, policy number.
They did not get banking details or drivers licence ( can we believe that )
This is why I have always said nothing is safe on a computer and until covid we had as little info there as possible. Now, much to my disgust for giving in, I am banking online but admit it is easy even if not 100% safe.

Yes the Criminal element in Russia (and elsewhere) has been active in cyber crime for quite some years, it's nothing new. Having said that, why do Medibank and other organisations need your details once you've left. It would seem that none of these places go out of their way to keep details completely secure.
I bank online, have done for quite a while. When you type the address in on your computer, you should be typing it in the address bar at the top of the screen, not in the window in the centre of the Google screen! That one is not secure. I don't have the bank password recorded on the computer, and I don't have bank details on my phone, (or e.mails) it's for making phone calls.
I have a Mac, and I run Malwarebytes and Clean my Mac to keep a check on malware.

When I log into the bank I don't type anything.
I have my bank logon saved as an icon within a desktop folder.
Also in that folder is a wordpad file, pictured below.
Within that wordpad doc is my bank password. Yes, my real password. See if you can find it
I use my mouse to select the first part of my password then drag it to the end of the second part of it, select the whole lot and drag it to my bank login.
Next I grab my account number (not shown below) and drag it across also, then click on login. No typing of anything is needed and the whole process takes about 10 seconds

It is a bit like a find the word puzzle. Did you get Frank, Douglas, Helen and my approval to use our names for that OT? 🤔

Roger,
It didn't occur to me to seek approval.
I rashly assumed it was OK for me to name the most intelligent people I know of
But now that you mention it I'm happy to delete any should they ask

I have explained a few times about how I give people I deal with their own personal email address. This is a benefit of having one's own domain name.
Example: If I had the pleasure of personal comms with Frank here I would give him say frank@ot.com as my email address. Only Frank and I would know this email address exists.
I did this with Medibank years ago. I gave them say medibank@ot.com and medibank@mrsot.com and once again only Medibank and I know these email addresses exist.
Yesterday I received 2 emails from businessloans365 and what appears a legitimate business. Those emails were addressed to each of my Medibank secret email addresses. Secret of course until the hack and now in the hands of cyber criminals.
I checked and it is a Federal offence to buy stolen data such as email addresses.
I now have unchallengeable proof that businessloans365 is using stolen data. I have reported this to the Government... www.cyber.gov.au/

Another email from Medibank, this time advising the hackers have my details similar to my wife's as above. We had two separate policy's so the info was obtained as a separate entity. Barry

Today so far I have received 3 spam/suss emails all addressed to my old Medibank email address.
I guess the dark web will continue to spread hacked personal info forever.

I got an email from Harvey Norman today informing me that there was a breach in Oct 2021 on the company that used to handle they concierge scheme which we had joined in 2017 It no longer exists and the company no longer handles their business so they are all apologies, my phone number, name, address, email have all been compromised 1. Why had it taken 18 moths to come to light? 2. Why did they still have that information of the scheme no longer exists? 3. Why was still with that company?
