Steep rises in energy costs?

I keep seeing on the media how much energy costs have risen and how much further they will go.

I remain puzzled by my own largely unaffected costs

In early October 2021 my bulk LPG delivery of around $800 cost $1.10/litre + GST

Next week I'll get another delivery at exactly the same $1.10/litre price.


In May 2020 my electricity cost:
Peak 29.1 cents/kWh
Off-peak 15.2 cents/kWh
Daily charge 112 cents
Feed-in rate 12 cents/kWh

Last bill 2 months ago cost:
Peak 27.5 cents/kWh
Off-peak 14.8 cents/kWh
Daily charge 91 cents
Feed-in rate 6.7 cents/kWh

To make a proper comparison given the different rates I took May 2020 consumption and generation data and plugged it into the last bill's different rates. The effect was to exactly replicate the consumption and solar generation circumstances.

Despite the solar credit now being about $20 less than in May 2020 the total bill rounded was $280 in May 2020 and $268 2 months ago.

In summary, my gas price has not changed in over 12 months and my electricity price is a bit cheaper now than it was 2.5 years ago.

I haven't noted any real rise in the costs either, our bills have been largely the same year to year for a while now, as yours have been.

Just had an email from Momentum who have been our electricity & gas supplier for several years and have always been competitive. Maybe not so into the future, we’ll see. This will certainly change our households usage. We have gas for heating and hot water.

I think Albo's promise was for the longer term with some immediate rises still expected to occur.

As for Momentum... I was with them for a few years for electricity till they got too expensive and I switched to Tango.

As I use LPG and no electricity provider offers that (as far as I know) I am on an 'electric only' plan.

I had a quick look at Momentum vs Tango gas and got this result with Tango on the left. I don't know if these are representative of your needs but may be worth a look...

Some tongue in cheek there OT and venting on the spur of the moment.

Sent an email to a couple of MPs, Federal and State with reply from Federal member who is raising it in parliament. Also sent one to Paul Murray at SKY and Ben Fordham at 2GB.

Currently looking at alternatives and so far Tango is one possible option but will wait until the first week of February when the prices change.

Two days ago I got my latest 3 monthly electricity bill.

All of the rates were identical to the last quarter and all of them still cheaper than in May 2020.

My bill at $349 was higher than the last one but mainly due summer air-con use... but still $10 cheaper than for the identical period 12 months ago.

No cost increases have been forecast by my retailer.

As reported on TV ths morning, there has been a significant drop in electricity prices. Depends on which state you are in.

With a review of our power bills we went from being in credit as we have 5 klw solar and usage only varies due to seasons.We are getting bills of over 250 dollars a Quarter
Our solar feeding tariff has gone down to between 5 and 8 cents a kW hour now.All of the residents in our village have had growing power bills and all have solar,a lot are paying hundreds and use to be in credit like me.I think all these governments of all colours have done a bad job on Energy.This country is filled to its back teeth with power supply options and should have the cheapest power in the world but they have buggered it up.Talk to your butchers or small hospitality venue and ask them about power prices.My mates pubs,one in Lismore and one in Ultimo in Sydney,there power has doubled in price.There are multiple issues but the main one is supply,more power and the prices will drop but now because these governments are hell bent on winning some imaginary prize for ha look at us and our green energy aren't we good.You have got NSW,and Victoria with gas exploration bans so now they won't to cut that out.But rely on Queensland and its coal seam gas which is expensive to extract.Nsw is going to allow the closure of Liddell shortly then Eraring to follow.That thousands of mgwatts of dispatchable power gone from the grid.God help us because Batteries and wind mills and solar won't .Buy a generator and some Gerry can of fuel.

An email arrived announcing new rates, effective 20/03/23 so ample notice.

Peak 29.15 cents/kWh
Off-peak 17.82 cents/kWh
Daily charge 87.56 cents
Feed-in rate 6.7 cents/kWh

When I apply those new rates to my bill of 3 days ago it would go from $349 to $391

So that's a 12% increase and I guess not too bad compared to some steep increases I've seen reported.

I saw today some NSW residents complaining of electricity bill increases of 50, 60 and one at 83%

I had a look at one common retailer to get an idea of current plans and how we compare.  I note in some sample bills that they describe household usage thus:
- light use (1 person) at 7kWh/day
- med use (2-3 persons) at 11.8kWh/day
- high use (4+ persons) at 15.5kWh/day

I then checked my spreadsheet that has every bill for the past 48 years
- over that full term in kWh/day... average 39, max 59 and min 14.

Of course we had 3 kids so 5 of us for many years but since they all left by 2006 then just the 2 of us for 17 years.
- over the last 15 years (no kids) in kWh/day... average 28, max 34 and min 14.

Also we have had solar for 9 years and most winters we are away for 2 to 3 months.

How can those retailer typical usage claims be realistic?
