We docked in Melbourne on the 10th October 1954. We arrived in Brisbane in November 1957.
I believe the MS in " MS Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt " stands for "Migrant Ship" so I suspect that it brought a lot of Clog Wogs to Australia.
Probably a much smaller Back Load than those of some other nation.
In reflection, the Old Man must have been made of stern stuff to migrate with a wife and four kids under 8 without all the modern hand outs.

I agree Gerrym, it must have been quite a brave move. You were only allowed so much baggage and belongings and only allowed a small amount of money to take with you. We spent the first couple of weeks in Bonegilla migrant hostel, then moved to Woodside hostel. Dad was assigned a job as a plasterer at the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital and given a single room at the Glenelg hostel. It was 3 weeks before a room became available so that mum, my brother and I were able to join him again. He made good money there, bought a car (Austin A30) and eventually moved into a Housing Trust home in Seacombe Gardens, where they spent the rest of their lives. Yes, they had other Dutch friends, but they assimilated very well into the Aussie way of life and loved their new country. They went back a couple of times to see rellies, but always came back saying they'd made the right choice. I am very lucky that dad actually scribed his memoirs, from an early age as a mischievous kid (not like me ), through his ordeals during the war as a civilian POW with forced labour, through to their migration and settling in Australia. A very interesting read!

As my Grandfather was a Captain in the Merchant Navy, I am familiar with the Naming Conventions.
However in the 50s she was very much a Migrant Ship.
5 weeks to get here and 5 weeks back would only allow 5 return trips per year.
And the remaining 2 weeks would easily be eaten up in docks.

Thanks Gerry.
I note that the article states a 6 week journey, which I had in mind but a note of my mother's suggested 36 days. So maximum of 4 trips per year then
