I often wonder about the relative merits of the vast range of Engine oils to choose from. Since I got my old GQ 4.2 EFI Patrol some 20yrs ago, I have always used Penrite HPR30 as advised by my mechanic at the time.
After some 250,000kms of towing a 2.5ton van, the motor still sounds sweet.
When it is time to do an oil change I always ponder whether I should change to the far cheaper ones like Castrol Magnatec.
Anyway, I just picked up 2 x 5L containers of my usual HPR30 'on special' @ around $37 each to meet my needs for a 7,000km (18mths) oil change.

I agree Graham, and what is the real difference between synthetic and as I say, normal real oil. I have a twenty year old normally aspirated 2.8l diesel and a 4 year old modern common rail 3.2l diesel. Some of these modern engines are recommended to only have synthetic oil yet there are others that can take the real stuff.
We may have to refer to Sol (Oils ain't oils)

It's hard to say what's the best. I went to Toyota spare parts place they were trying to sell Toyota oils, the other side of the shop it was Honda parts and the Honda oil was a lot more expensive i said what's the difference they couldn't tell me. Then i had a look in to the service area, there they were using Castrol oils so Castrol oils will do me or any other well-known brand, but i like to stick to the same brand. I have never used synthetic oil, for the driving we do ordinary 15-40 oil will do and that's what is recommended in the book. But be careful, if you use an oil the manufactures don't recommend it can affect your warranty, years ago i worked with John Deere tractors, and we had to use their oils, i don't know of any cars that specify that.

I just had the oil replaced in My Land cruiser auto gearbox. I used the genuine Toyota oil. I know there are probably equivalents but these things don't even have a dipstick to tell the colour of the oil. I mean you used to look at the colour to see the oils condition. Being a mostly tow vehicle and only done just under 140,000 klm I don't trust dealers or mechanics view on cheap alternatives. Toyota puts the fear of God into us and send blokes to check on what you are putting in ....(joke) I don't want to get off the Christmas card list....

My Patrol is the same DT. Fully sealed gearbox and no dipstick. Fortunately I was able to purchase the tool to refill the pan. They want an arm and a leg at the dealer for an auto service and all it is is a fluid change. No parts involved and nothing to adjust. I used the Penrite product that satisfied the fluid specs. You could not credit the difference it made.Just so smooth now. After 50 thou the fluid was a little discoloured but no burnt odour. Ive done 80thou now so I'll give it another change when I get home from FNQ. I get snakey with dealers as the moto manufacturers make vehicles not produce oils. Modern oils and lubricants are far superior to the old "oils aint just oils Sol" stuff that we thought was just the ducks guts when we were young bucks. I am sure that Castrol Magnatec meets the specifications advertised but I will continue to stick with Penrite synthetic products.
